Christmas Bonus!

OK, I am new at this but my office gave out christmas bonuses and everyone got one except for us two hygienists. I work for an office where what the doctor’s wife says that’s what goes right or wrong. She doesn’t believe in treating hygienists well and that’s why I am the 13th one there. How would you guys approach it? would you say anything to the doctor? Thank you

Thank you for the input… I appreciate it! I only found out because the girls thought everyone got a bonus. What hurt us the most, is the message sent to us …Christmas bonus simply says that I am appreciated. You are right, hygiene right now is the department that brings the most in. We see 10 pts a day and do plenty of SRPs. The office didn’t run this way previously. I really don’t like working there much anymore, but love my patients & get along great with all of the girls.

Prove through production numbers how much you are worth to his bottom line. Show comparisons of reports before you started and after you started. If the wife is the only person telling the boss that you get paid too much to deserve a bonus you need to show how much you’ve brought to his bottom line. I bet the spouse has never ran the numbers…… Good luck.

Discuss with the doctor. It’s not fair. You work just as hard as the other employees. I do think Christmas bonus shouldn’t be discussed amongst each other same as pay scale. Christmas bonus is a privalege and should not be expected since most dental employers are very small business and it is hard running a business, paying payroll taxes each ect… It’s also hard when spouses with no dental experience get involved in the financial side. Just privately talk to the boss. Also, really research on how to help your hygiene department become profitable so that you are more valuable to this office. Treat it like its your business. Keep track of production, open appts, prophies, Perio treatments.

I would not speak to the Dr. If is truly a “Christmas” bonus I would say it is considered a gift. To me it would be like saying “hey you gave everyone else a gift where is mine?” If it is an end of the year or quarty bonus based on production then I would not hesitate to ask. Saying something to the effect of “did we not meet our goals?” “What can I do as a hygienist to change that?”.
Also, are you full or part time? I have worked at offices where you are not eligible for any bonuses/vacation due to being part time.

Also, could be there is a certain time you have to be employed there before being eligible.

I agree with Jameslou. You may not get a bonus until being employed for a year etc… If you have only been employed there a few months I doubt I would give you a bonus for Christmas. If I did give you a bonus it would be considerably less than what the long term employees would receive.

Thank you everyone! I have been with the office 2 yrs now & work full time. The Dr. wife doesn’t feel that hygiene deserves one as they make more money, at least that’s how she justifies it, & that’s why I am the 14th hygienist there.
