Crestal Bone on BWX

We have a size 1 digital sensor. My Dr has recently gotten insistent on getting crestal bone on all upper and lower teeth in the film including the distal of 3rd molars. Me and the other hygienists are having problems with this on pts with bone loss with such a small sensor. Any hints or tips that could help us?

I would ask your boss to show you the proper way that they want it done.

OMG these Doctors are always wanting something new. I agree with hygenius 100%. Since he thinks it can be done then let him show you a couple. Two things should happen: He realizes a larger size sensor is required “which is what I believe.” Or he nails it every time and you learn a new technique. A win win for all!

Take verticles…slippage is an issue however an a 50/50 Is difficult to obtain…especially in flat palates , tori and narrow arches

Can you get size 2 sensors? A size 1 is too small for most adults. If not the only other ssuggestions I can think of is verticals or all PA’s.

Verticle radiographs for crestal bone is the easiest, you can use adhesive pads to help with the comfort of the tori and palate.

Get a #2 sensor…There is no way that I could consistently take 4 BW’s and get the crestal bone on all adult patients.. The only other way would be to take 4 PA’s of posteriors to get the needed information.

Size one sensors are for pedo patients. The dentist should show you how getting crestal bone with size one sensors is done if he is so insistent. Can’t have it both ways if he wants you to use a size one sensor!

We only had a size one sensor too and even on people with very minimal boneless we struggle to get 1/8″ crestal bone. So a lot of time 4 hbwx would turn into 4 hbwx and 2-4 horizontal “pa’s” to get the bone levels. This was all before, when I was an assistant, but if I return to that office as a hygienist I would like to recommend a size 2 sensor to the dr.
