dental assistant forced to punch out when no patient in chair

I am dental assistant in New York. The office manager says I have to punch out when there’s no patient in the chair because no production is being made. I ask, so that’s my fault?? How can I be penalized for that– hygiene I can see– but a dental assistant, non-producing position? Need an answer. Thanks.

I’ve heard of hygienist having to clock out (which I don’t agree with), but assistants?! Was this the office managers call or the dentists? I would have a sit down with the dentist because this doesn’t seem right. For example, does a grocery clerk clock out if no one is in their line… nope! You may also want to contact your state’s employment department and find out if this is even legal. Even with no patient there is still work to be done: instruments, stocking supplies, etc. so this doesn’t even make sense to me! Good luck!

Does the office manager clock out if there are no patients in the chair? I find this ridiculous…there is plenty for any of the employees to do to fill time when there are no patients, especially for the assistant. I agree with Kara, contact your state employment office and then have a sit down with the owner.
