Dentists avoiding preventive care?!

I will be seeing a new pt. In a few weeks, and she is clueless to what a teeth cleaning is. She said that she was never recommended one by her previous dentist, but has continued to get fillings and crowns by this dentist.

What kind of dentist tells their patient of 8 years that they don’t need a teeth cleaning bc there’s no plaque or buildup on their teeth!!?

I have my work cut out for me when she comes in as a new patient bc this lady has no idea what a dental cleaning is!!!

Time to educate and retrain a stubborn mindset.

It’s like us telling patients they don’t have to wash their hands bc we don’t “see” anything dirty on them…

Has anyone else experienced this?

Just remember ….. We don’t know what was said or done at previous office all we can do is educate and tell them what we see and recommend now at our office.
I had a pt that is Perio and after all the education before and after S/RP and several 3 month Perio Maintenance appts……while making her next appt she asked: Now, I don’t have that gum disease do I? ……………
She always has heavy calculus build up no matter how many OHI instructions given. Every three months she looks like she hasn’t been cleaned in years.
My point is this:
This pt could leave and go to another office and tell them she has never been told she has any gum disease and she will present with the amount of calculus that looks like it’s been years and when she just had the teeth cleaned 3 months ago. The new office would be thinking…….how was all this missed?! Well, it wasn’t missed!

Request Perio charting and cleaning history from previous dentist if you can. After gathering previous dentist info you can then find out if pt was never cleaned or educated about hygiene etc… the previous dentist/ hygienist may not be to blame.

Totally agree w/ hygenious! I had a similar pt just 2 days ago. Pt came in notes said PM I hadn’t seen him before, he was concerned about his cost so I called the office manager over to review- then it comes out that the other rdh never told him he needs to come in more often blah blah. Well then there cost gets handled then he tells me that he’s had had hx of perio surg! So then I’m like okay clearly u know ur on a pm schedule! But he was never sure of it. It’s crazy but the patient really doesn’t know what goes one at times. It’s confusing and frustrating for everyone. What I learned that day is changing how I ask questions to the pt. to get the answers we need.

I have a similar patient that went to the same dentist all her life, and then moved out of that state to our area. Her old DDS was OLD SCHOOL, as in he didn’t even wear gloves. He also didn’t have a hygienist and did all her “cleanings”, meaning he polished her teeth. So when I picked up a probe and a scaler, it took a lot of patient education to tell her what the heck I was doing. But fast forward a few years to her last appointment, and I was able to finally convince her to go see a periodontist for a consult about grafting. Baby steps. 🙂
