Employee Benefits

Just wondering if anyone gets paid holidays out there? We have always had a certain number of paid holidays as part of a benefit package. We have a new consultant in our office and she now states that if a holiday falls on our day off (we are all full time RDH) then we will not get paid. Also, if a holiday is on a weekend….we will not get paid. Is this a typical situation?

Nurses also work odd hours and in hospitals that are open 24/7. The dental field is much different. No patients would come in on a holiday so there is not an incentive to want hygienist to work a holiday to get paid time and a half pay etc…. I say no patients woud come in on a holiday except maybe one the rest of the day would be wide open. Medical offices aren’t open either on holidays. Most hygienists are lucky to find full time positions that include any type of benefits. Most are hired part time to get out of paying benefits to hygienist. I use to worked full time for a well known cosmetic dentist that did not offer any benefits and could afford to pay benefits too. I now work full time for a dentist that does cosmetic, but doesn’t push it that offers vacation, sick, health, dental, lab, bonuses, holiday pay if wk day falls on holiday and has even given me gifts certificates for Pilates, Massage and pays for occasional CE Course and 25% uniform allowance with 100% lab coats. I can wear business attire or scrubs or clothes that I will wear at home too and I’ll be reimbursed 25%. I can order instruments, supplies, supplies to try, cavitron inserts when needed. I also buy things myself if I chose to. My employer is few and far between. No wonder I’ve been there over 9 years and will not be leaving ever!

Ugh, I’m really starting to believe I am the luckiest hygienist in the world! we take off all major holidays and get paid. If the holiday falls on Sunday we take Monday and get paid for it. I do work 5 days a week so maybe that matters, not sure. I’ve been there 10 yrs now and I also get 3 weeks paid vacation, 5 sick days, they offer insurance but I’m on my husband’s, I also get profit sharing and have over 100,000 that he’s paid into over the 10 yrs, I haven’t contributed anything! He usually pays my continuing education also. At Xmas I get a weeks pay and a small gift and he takes us out to lunch or dinner! I had no idea how rough people people have it!

Maybe you and the other hygienists should collectively voice your concerns with your doctor on this issue without the consultant. We currently have 5 paid holidays but if they fall on the weekend or a day I don’t work (friday) I am not paid for them. So I think this is typical and fair protocol. I wouldn’t expect to be paid for Christmas if it’s on Saturday.

Thanks for your opinion but I disagree……There is something called a benefit package. A certain number of holidays/sick time and vacation time…no matter when the holidays fall. This is the problem with the dental hygiene profession….and i can’t believe i’m saying this because i do think they are abused at times….but like the nursing profession….the hygiene profession should be unionized.

I only get paid for the holiday if it falls on my work day. So if it is the weekend then I don’t get paid. I agree with Fdlg75 that this is typical. Prior to hygiene I worked in a pharmacy and it was the same protocol for holiday pay.

I receive no holiday pay and I’m full time. I say take what you can get and be happy with it. We just started to receive pto but only 5 days. We don’t work on Christmas but weekday or weekend I get no pay just the day off, same with any other holiday.

I agree with everyone else. I only get paid holiday pay if it falls on my regular work day…..sometimes we will take off more days than just the one the holiday falls on and if it falls on my work day my boss will pay me for those days as well. I get also get vacation and sick pay. If I don’t use those I loose them.

Thanks everyone….guess there’s no such thing as a benefit package anymore in the dental field. Sad….the nurses out there are smart.

I work 2 jobs part time so when I don’t work due to the holidays or illness I’m just SOL.
