How do I look for a new job when I am currently working full time?

I’ve been at the same office for five years and need a change. How am I supposed to interview and/or do a working interview when most offices in my area work Monday-Thursday just like my current office does? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This is a very difficult dilemma because it is hard to interview for a job when you already have a job you need to be at. First off, count your lucky stars that you are even in the position where you have a job in the first place. While it may not be the perfect job, I can’t count how many messages I get from other hygienists looking for advice on how to find a job because the market is so bad right now. I would really evaluate what it is that is causing you to want to change. If there is unethical behavior or you don’t get along with the Dr or your co-workers, then I totally understand wanting a change. If you’ve just reached the 5 year point where you want something new, you might want to wait until the job market improves before aggressively searching for a new job.

With all that said, if you are actively looking for a job just explain the situation to the Dr or office manager that calls you back for an interview. They will understand the scheduling conflict and if your resume and brief phone interview impresses them enough, they will be willing to work out a time where you can either go during lunch or after work. The bonus of currently having a job is it makes you look that much more desirable than a hygienist who has been out of practice for a period of time because they are currently unemployed. If you do get to the point where a working interview is requested, remind the office of your situation (which you would have previously brought up during the phone interview or regular interview) and then tell them if they are really interested in you then you will take time off from your current job.

As for how to bring this up with your current employer, there are a couple routes you can can take. The first is you can call in sick the day of your working interview. I do NOT recommend taking this route because it is being dishonest and can cause your current employer to have to scramble for a replacement for the day. The way I recommend going about it is to talk to your office manager and tell them you need the day off for a personal matter. Don’t ask for the day off because then it might appear that you are flexible on the date and they might ask if you can take another day off. Just let them know you need the day off and give them as much advance notice as you can give once you have the working interview scheduled. You are under no obligation to tell your current employer that you are looking for a new job, and I wouldn’t mention it because it might cause some tension in the office, especially if you don’t get hired at the new place!

Don’t forget that there are a ton of unemployed hygienists who would love to be in your position right now where they have a job and a steady paycheck, so try not to take your current job for granted, even if it isn’t the most perfect situation.

I hope this helps give you some direction for your current situation and I wish you the best of luck in your job search!

DDS are usually understanding and flexible. Try to interview before you need to be at work, lunch time or after work. Some Dds do have later hours 1 day per week. It’s ok to wear scrubs to an interview when you are working it in around your working schedule. Be sure to have a good reason why you want to change offices. You’ll probably be asked at the interview.

It’s difficult to be in this position. I actually found my new job (of 7 months) on Craigslist. I emailed the doctor my resume and references, along with a cover letter. I emailed back and forth a couple of times with the office manager, and after a few weeks, the doctor mad arrangements for me to come for an interview before either of us started patients for the day. By that time, he had already talked to my references, and offered me the job. Also, Network, Network, Network! Good luck in your job search!

It’s tough to schedule the interviews but do what is right for you!

I am also in this same position but I work Tuesday-Friday. Most offices here are Monday-Thursday. Right now I have an interview scheduled for a Friday because the doctor is doing them when the office is closed. I had to find someone to work for me instead of calling in sick. I let the doctor doing the interview know that I really would like to meet him, but I need to find someone to replace me for the day. I think it makes me look more responsible. Good luck!

You have to do the best for yourself. Online job hunting is great. Mail your resume to the offices your interested in and if they are interested they’ll contact you and set up what’s best for you both.
