Loupes

How many ‘old school’ hygienists have gone to using loupes and do you use them with every patient?

I am not “old school” but I have had loupes with an attahed light since I was in hygiene school. I cannot work well without them! There are even some offices that I know of that require you to have them. It lets you see what even the most skilled hygienist can miss. There were days when I forgot my loupes and I couldn’t see a darn thing! (So I guess dependance on them is the only negative thing I can think of) Even when I didn’t have my light because the wire broke and I was waiting on a replacement I was slower because I had to keep readjusting the light and I was working in shadow alot. So worth the investment!

I practiced for 13 years before buying my first pair of Loupes. I can’t believe what you see with them and I can’t imagine what I didn’t see without them! I would never work on a patient now without my Loupes.

I feel like my patients “pre loupes” were given a disservice, so needless to say I love my loupes!!

I had been practicing for 10 years when I broke down and bought loupes. I did not buy the light until a year later. I absolutely love them. It did take a couple weeks to get used to wearing them. At first I did not wear them all day only half days. I felt like they would help with my posture and they have. It is amazing how much better I see everything. Once I bought the light it was like night and day. Now I wear them pretty much all day. Sometimes I wear regular safety glasses for kids because they move around so much.

I have worn loupes for the past 7 years, and I CANNOT work without them. I also purchased a light a few years ago, and it is wonderful! Your head never gets in the way. It was very easy to get used to wearing the loupes. It also helps with ergonomics, because in order to focus, you must be 14 inches away from your target (the mouth) and it forces you to sit upright and not slouch.

I practiced for 27 years before I bought my loupes with the attached light. I have been using them for over a year now, and can’t imagine practicing without them. I never use the overhead light unless my battery goes out towards the end of an appointment. I use them on every patient and it’s amazing how much more you can see. It took me about a week to get used to them. I feel my posture is much better now. I would highly recommend them for every hygienist.

I’m thinking about getting loupes. Can anyone recommend an affordable place to purchase them?

I LOVE my loupes, but have not had them for about 6 weeks now and not only do I feel my visual field is not what it should be, but my neck and posture is suffering also. The postural thing I had NO idea about until I had started wearing the loupes. They really do keep you from leaning and contorting your body to see! GREAT investment for MANY reasons! I just purchased a new pair from Orascoptic where the loupes flip up. I chose these over the light because our office is paperless and I was removing my loupes each time and switching to my regular glasses to input my info into the computer. I could not see the computer screen accurately enough with the actual loupes in place. I have used ONLY Orascoptic product, but after this last incident with getting these new loupes to me in a timely manner I will not be using them again if and when I need another pair. It always takes forever to get these glasses back and some other issues with the company. Their products are good however.

Designs for Vision makes great loupes and light sources. I have had my current pair for over 10 years.

The flip up kinds have been known to get loose and cross-contamination is an issue. The magnification on the insets is cut straight across the top so you can peer right over them without removing them.

The lilies through any of the companies isn’t cheap, but if you buy them in conjunction with a light source, you can often get a “deal”. 🙂

I’m not “old school” yet, but do work with some hygienists who have practiced for over 25yrs. Definitely, took them longer to “adjust” but I know we all have trouble now if we don’t have them. You would be amazed, though it does make me even more OCD 🙂 We are all now looking into getting a light….

I went through hygiene school and my first year of practice with out them before I caved and bought loupes..they are the BEST investment! My back and neck NEVER hurt anymore and I can easily and accurately read my probe. I honestly believe a hygienist who has loupes is at a huge advantage..I used to think that they werent needed but after using them and realizing how much more you can see and how even the best hygienists miss things I would NEVER go back!

Orascoptic has been AMAZING to work with! They are very timely and have the best lights out there! They slso offer a lifetime warranty on the loupes and dont charge anything to fix them or send them in..its wonderful! They are expensive regardless of who you buy them from but Orascoptic makes it more affordable as you can do 3mth, 6mth or 9mth payments to break it up with no penaltiess. If I’d do it again I wouldnt wait so long to get them!

Thanks for all your input. After 31 years of practicing I purchased a Rx pair from Designs by Vision. My only regret is not getting them sooner!

I had DFV TTL for 8 years……($1200). I had severe pain in neck, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands. Thought I would be disabled soon. At first the DFV helped ergonomics from being able to see better… The Designs for Vision salesman didn’t know much about ergonomics. I trusted him to know how to fit me correctly. Over the years I have done my research and I thnk I’d be better at fitting hygienists for loopes than any of the salesmen I’ve come across over the years.
I’ve recently bought SurgiTel Radar Flip up with motion activated light. Immediately from the first use I noticed all my pain was slowly going away. The new loupes provide a very step declination angle and I even went up in magnification fom DFV 2.5 to a SurgiTel 3.5 magnification. Best $2200 I’ve ever spent. Wish I had SurgiTel from day one. Wish I had thoroughly researched and knew what to look for from day one. I owe my vast knowledge of loupes to Posturedontics.
