Periodontal charting

How often do the hygienist in your office do full mouth periodontal charting on their patients? Our practice just got bought by a new dentist and before we only did it once every two years now he wants us to do it at every appointment.

The standard of care for perio charting is at least once per year. Some offices choose to perio chart perio maint. patients more often to watch for disease progression.

I do full charting with PD, AL, Bleeding, Supperation, Furcation, Mobility, MAG/NAG etc… On all new patients and then update every couple years. I do PD full mouth on every patient every appt. the computer software is set to bring last charting up which includes all the AL, furcations etc…so that a quick look you can check recession etc…. If you are running behind you can just change the numbers that need to be changed from previous charting, but that rarely happens since I have a dedicated assistant that helps the whole appt.

Personally, I probe full mouth at every visit – However, I record the changes at their periodic exam. The other appts I’m basically looking for something that would cause concern of a larger issue, like a really large pocket that appears/exudate, things like that. I’ve found it 2-3 times already on spot-check appts and had to refer to perio!

We probe every year starting at age 18 unless we suspect periodontal issues before age 18. I always spot probed perio patients at every appt.
