pts rejecting Fluoride for fear of cancer or mystery disease etc

Are you guys doing fluoride treatments on adult pts. At my office we do however as of lately many pts are refusing it because of various reasons: like it causes cancer, or the government uses it as mind control. I always tell my pts what the ADA recommends. Have you guys come across this? and how do you handle it?

Yes I hate all the mis information on the internet.
Education IS the key.
Adults need fluoride just as much as children. Things adults eat and drink. The fact that adults drink more bottled water, the fact most adults have recession, and previous restorations. All these weaken teeth. A large % of adult patients suffer from GERD.
Educate educate educate!!
We use a varnish fluoride on just about everyone.
We have a few that are anti fluoride.
Our biggest reason for declining is cost due to no insurance coverage. But then again it’s up to us to educate. Benefits out weigh cost anyday!!!

Have any of you had pts tell you that they are “ALLERGIC” to fluoride! Yet they drink fluoridated water and brush with Regular OTC tooth paste. Such nonsense

We too occasionally have patients with concerns about fluoride. I explain that the office treatment is a topical application as compared to ingested such as water fluoridation or fluoride tablets. If they still do not want I explain the research on remineralization with xylitol products and the importance of quality saliva. Xylitol is a natural 5 carbon sugar that inhibits decay causing acids.

I have come across with adult patients and adults who don’t want their children to have it. I just make sure they have accurate information on fluoride and in the end it is still their decision. People make uninformed decisions about their medical and dental care everyday. As long as we do all we can in regards to education, emphasizing good home care and recommend alternative adjuncts that can help keep the caries risk down without fluoride then thats all we can be expected to do.

It’s a similar problem in our office with amalgam restorations and mercury toxicity. Education is key. Pts cannot make informed divisions without all the information available to them. Even then, they don’t always make the decision we might think best. Unfortunately there is a great deal of misinformation available on the internet.

@sugarbughill: thats amazing that people would refuse a fluoride treatment due to cost but then turn around and spend a lot of money in a fancy meal or pocket book. Priorities!

Living in Eugene, Oregon I hear a lot of interesting refusals of fluoride. Its sad when they come into the chair with a bunch of buccal V’s and incipient caries. I educate them about the facts of fluoride and how it cane benefit them. I let them know its found in a lot of other products as well including some vegetables. They usually don’t like to hear that. If the are still against and they believe that their information to be sound and true I suggest other products. There are some products on the market that use calcium phosphate that supports remineralization. Xylotol is the main go to and easiest to find. I like to educate them about diet and most of all home care.

I work in a community clinic. We put varnish on everyone. I’ve had a few refuse it. I educate the patient, but the choice is still theirs.

We can talk until blue in the face, but it’s the choice of the patient!

Although I shake my head at the patients that tell me Fluoride is next to the devil, you have to respect these peoples beliefs. MI-paste is a great alternative to anti fluoride patients. It gives you the opportunity to respect what they believe and offer them a natural alternative. This also gives the patients one less excuse that they can give you about why they don’t want the fluoride treatment. This alternative is also really good for children that parents say no to fluoride as you can apply this in office and the parents also have the option to buy it from you and use it at home. This has been a tremendous help in my office!
