x-rays while patient is reclined

I finally got my dentist to agree to start letting me do more x-rays in the office because I am afraid that I will lose my skills – I have taken maybe 3 x-rays in the last 18 months that I have worked there and it’s my first job out of school.

Everyone in my practice takes x-rays while the patient is reclined. I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal for me to do the same, but I was totally wrong. I can’t seem to get a decent x-ray while the patient is reclined. Can anyone give me some tips? Please don’t just tell me to have the patient sit upright. Everyone else’s x-rays turn out great so I know it’s possible. Thanks so much for your help!

I personally have never taken x-rays re-clined but more-so because they start out sitting up with medical history so I just leave them that way. Although I could see where it may help with gag reflex and stuff. Are you raising them up high enough so you can see? I mean it’s the same and everything you were taught up-right just at a 90 degree difference.

I might not be raising them high enough to be able to visualize everything. And I think I’m panicking as well because I have maybe taken 3 x-rays in the last 3 years that I’ve been out of school. Thanks for your answer!

Personally, I would take films however they turn out the best. Unless it is office protocol to have them reclined…

What kind of office do you work in? 3 xrays in that time period?

Our assistant takes x rays like that all the time, and I have tried a few times… Can’t do it! Mine turn out MUCH MUCH better with the patient sitting up. Unless there is some reason you feel like you need to take them reclined, I’d say do whatever you are most comfortable with and whatever gets you the best results.
