Are Doctors required to pay employees for mandatory training on our own time?

We were recently required to take an OSHA class that was offered in our office on our day off. The doctor says that He requires all employees to take the course once a year or we can’t work in his office. He says that he pays the trainer so we can come to the office and get it free or go elsewhere and pay for it ourselves or find another job. We are in Virginia, if that matters. I have worked in dentistry for 20 years and always been paid for mandatory training time

OSHA training is federally mandated hence OSHA training must be covered by your employer via federal law.

In my office we get paid for mandatory training time such as OSHA and CPR if we are required to be there. I live in Oregon so I’m not sure of the rules/laws of Virginia. I would contact your states employment department for more info on labor laws.
