At my age of 50, is it too late to enter dental hygiene school?

RuthAnn said it perfectly! It’s never too late to do what you love! I would tell anyone, no matter their age, that your health (especially of your neck and back) is something to take into account. The only other thing you may want to consider is your ability to pay back any student loans you may have to take out. The last thing I want to point out is that, with a degree in dental hygiene, there’s more you can do besides clinical work (which is what’s hard on your body). You can work for dental companies as a rep/educator, as an educator in a dental hygiene program, in research, public health, consultant, among others. Like RuthAnn, the oldest in my hygiene program was in her 50’s, with another student right behind her in her later 40’s. Again, if dentistry is your passion, be glad you found your passion, no matter your age!!

Nope! Do what is going to make you happy. The oldest woman in my class was in her 50’s and we didn’t think twice about it. It’s pretty rewarding being part of a group that’s focused on the same goal. The only thing I would take into account is your health. If you already have back, neck or hand problems it might not be the best option since this career is very hard on the body.
