Hi Everyone, I have been a hygienist for 5 years and I have been working at my current job in NC for 3 years. I am now making 28$ an hr. I usually run one column and usually 8-10 pts a day with no assistant. My boss is going on vacation for 4 days and we will have a temp Dentist in office. I guess he does not want the temp dentist to do any restorative work, so he has decided to have me run two columns with his assistant as my hyg assistant . She will do my xrays, polish and exams. All I have to do is scale. I want to know if you all think I should ask for some type of commission or extra pay for those days that he is gone. Although I won’t have to polish, etc. we all know that the brunt of the work comes with scaling. I will go from 8 pts a day to 16. I will be responsible for all of the production for those days he is gone, so I feel I should be compensated for it. Do you all think I should ask for more money or just do it.

My guess is he has to add the second column of hygiene production so he can pay the temp dentist their salary. Is $28 the going rate for your state? In your state do you have to have a dentist there while your boss is on vacation? In my state I can see pt of record without the dentist and the pt has to have had an exam at least within the last 13 months. It hurts the production due to missing Exam, but we don’t have to pay a temp dentist salary either. Your boss may say no to commission simply for the fact that you will have an assistant. That assistant will do everything for you except scale…….just guessing that’s what your boss will say. It never hurts to ask! All they can do is say yes or no. I like how employers try present benefits of having an assistant……all you have to do is scale! I agree with you that scaling is a tough job!! Good luck. Let us know what happens!!
We just keep working as usual also when he is on vacation…for emergency needs we refer to another local office but all hyg just keeps on keeping on while he’s out of the office…restorative needs get scheduled as usual for an upcoming opening with the Dr
