Cavitron tip burned patient

Today a colleague of mine burned the buccal mucosa of her pt with the backside of the cavitron tip. The only thing I can think of, is power was too high/water was too low? Has this happened to any of you? How do you typically set your water?

I burned a pt on the lower lip once with a new piezo that my office bought.
Here’s what I learned:
– It all depends on the unit you are using, some need a lot of water to stay cool even though it is annoying to have to suction it all up, in a perfect world it should be a spray with a fast drip of water, but with some units esp older ones or cheap ones you need a lot of water so that the tip stays cool
– always use appropriate power levels, don’t just leave the unit on a high level and use that on all the pts
– every once in while feel the tip to make sure it’s not hot (obviously with your gloved hands)
– I like to tell the pt ‘let me know if it feels sensitive/ hot on your tooth,’ usually the pt senses it quickly
– better retraction with a mouth mirror/suction may help as well
happy cavitroning <3
