Chlorhexidine Irrigation and Breastfeeding?

Are there contraindications to subgingivally irrigating with chlorhexidine while breastfeeding? I am scheduled for an SRP with a nursing mom and I can’t remember. I found online that effects are “unknown”, so I am thinking I’ll opt to not irrigate this time. I welcome your thoughts – thank you!

Wait sorry…….forgot it was about breast feeding. Still get clearance from OBGYN.

I would only recommend warm salt water rinses if you are worried. I guess you could use any brand of alcohol free mouthwash…..if you think irrigating with a medicament is necessary. You could use alcohol free chx and make sure to suction well. If pt is in second or third trimester most medications within reason are fine to use. You could also get a clearance of any and all medications, product ingredients from the pt OBGYN. Create a form letter with all products that could be used during S/RP that includes space for the OBGYN to add notes etc and a place for them to sign. Never had a doctor not want to sign a form such as this.

I’m not for sure if it is contraindicated…when I was pregnant with my first child I had a large filling replaced and the DDS irrigated the cavity with CHX. I remember her assuring me that she was only disinfecting the tooth and not using it on the gum tissue. Since then I haven’t used it for pregnant or nursing moms.
When I did a search I found the it is Pregnancy Category B AND C.
