Differences between working at a perio office vs. a general?

Hello, I recently got some temp work at a perio office and I’m wondering what to expect since I’ve never worked at one before. What are the big differences between it than a general vs perio office?

You are going to see more periodontally-involved patients than you otherwise might see in a general dentistry office. Some of these patients may be phobic of the dentist, hence large gaps in dental visits. Any office should have a strong periodontal protocol, but especially in a perio office. This protocol may include the use of medicaments like irrigation, placement of site specific subgingival medicaments, etc. You will also see maintenance patients some with advanced attachment loss, so advanced instrumenting of furcations and significant root exposure will be needed. Some of these patients will have periodontal risk factors such as early onset of periodontal diseases (prior to the age of 35 years), unresolved inflammation at any site, vertical bone defects, progressive mobility and attachment loss, anatomical gingival deformities, pocket depths greater than 5 mm, and radiographic bone loss. These patients may also have medical risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, drug-induced gingival problems, compromised immune systems, or osteoporosis/osteopenia that will need to be documented (the same as a general office, just more of it possibly). Best of luck, you may find that you love it!
