Cynthia and I are correct.
If you don’t use it on an infected person and in turn use it on a patient that was not honest on health history and indeed are infected then you just contaminated you and the whole office with those aerosols. So….what then?
I think universal precaution is the key. I think HIV dies once it hits the air right? Also I believe that MANY patients hide or do not know their true medical status. I’ve seen patients for years that told me they just found out they have HIV. Every time we see patines we must assume every patient has everything and use universal precautions!
I have been a hygienist for 15 yrs and you are correct not using a cavitron on Hep pts and only hand scaling because its a airborn situation and hand scale Aids pts.
Also make sure to control the spray with HVE. I use the blue boa with the hygoformic saliva ejector.
You shouldn’t use the ultrasonic on any patient with a communicable disease that could be transmitted through the aerosols. That includes all types of hepatitis, strep throat, and tuburculosis.
I don’t use the cavitation or any ultrasonic on these patients as it does cause aerosols. I remember being taught this in school as well.
Use universal precautions. Treat every one the same. Because what good does it do to not use it on a person that you know is infected and then turn around and use it on a person that is does not know or does not let you know that they are infected.
