Expanded Practice Dental Hygiene

I am really interested in using my Expanded Practice Permit when I graduate school. How would I go about utilizing this permit? Can someone give me some pointers on how to start this. I want to reach people who otherwise could not be reached and open the doors to dental hygiene for them. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have this permit. I am using it to see the elderly in their homes and care facilities. Many others here in Oregon use it for seeing underserved children and I know of one lady who rents space in a health clinic and sees people that cannot afford typical in office care.
For me, the greatest part is feeling like I am making a difference. It is also nice being my own boss and the production is mine. 🙂 The greatest challenge has been marketing. Many do not understand the connection between oral health and systemic health and the mouth is ignored a lot.

Albert, what state are you in?
I would suggest that you do spend some time chairside so you can see what sector of the population you are comfortable with. Working independently does take a fairly good sized investment, you want to know you will love what you are doing. 🙂

Thanks Sue,
I am from Eugene, Oregon and will be graduating from LCC here in June. I love working with all kinds of people but especially want to target the retired and the poor populations. It seems like a lot now are getting dental care through OHP but it limits prophy and perio maintenance to once a year. I would love to fill in the gaps of care for these patients who need multiple visits per year.

Congratulations on your graduating in June, Albert. One thing you might consider to get your feet wet, look up ENDS. They are a group of mobile dental professionals and I believe there are units in Eugene. You could see patients in care facilities without personal financial expenses.
Medicaid does cover some of the elderly but many are still private pay. Medicaid covers only $40. For a prophy, so you need to consider whether that would work for you or not. Good luck in your new career, whichever way it takes you. 🙂

You don’t necessarily need your Expanded Practice Permit for this, but another organization you could look into is the Dental Foundation of Oregon which has The Tooth Taxi. I think that would be right up your alley regarding reaching patients that lack access to care (kids in this case). It’s a diesel pusher with two fully functional operatories (I toured it at the Oregon Dental Convention a month ago). Their website is: http://www.smileonoregon.org/.

Also, this is a great question to your instructors as they could help you with the exact steps you should take next! Utilize them while you can!
