Depends on the patient and their needs. I have a patient in particular that has moderate gingivitis and at every recall ends up having recurrent caries on several max anterior teeth. We constantly go over home care but she still seems to have difficulties at home. So I placed her on a 4 month prophy recall and she is aware that she will have to pay out of pocket for one appointment a year since insurance will not pay more than every 6 months. I explained to her that she is paying for the extra appointment for the benefit of her oral health. So far she is doing great and looking forward to her recall appointments. So I would say every patient is a case by case appointment. If you feel that it will benefit the patient and they are in need of being seen earlier, then by all means recommend a more frequent recall schedule. Hope that helps!
