Giving patients less service than others?

Today I was temping and the dentist came up to me and said “With patients on ________’s discount plan, just Xray, cavitron and polish. No scaling.” Those patients on the _______’s discount plan were also only scheduled for 20 minutes. I felt this was highly unethical. I of course treated the patients like anyone else (and obviously spent more than the 20 minutes they were scheduled for). I was a little behind schedule today because of this.

My question is, does this happen anywhere else? I find this super unethical and I’ve lost all respect for that dental office in particular.

I would think this wasn’t just unethical but completely illegal. You can not treat a pt one & another a different way just because of insurances, discount plans, or finances in general.

No this should not be happening anywhere else. I have worked in offices that accept discount ins plans and Medicaid and all pts are treated the same. I would refuse to work at this office. I can’t imagine what he is doing to these poor pts in his procedures with them. If he does not want to provide quality care to these pts he needs to stop accepting their insurance plan. Glad you did what was right thing and provided full care.

Thanks for your answers! I knew it was shady! Not to mention anyone on _______’s discount plan could not get fluoride, even children! The children who are on that discount plan need it the most! So sad!

Yikes! That’s scary & you did the right thing. Thank goodness you were temping and not accepting a full time position. I agree with contacting the board & you might also want to let the temp agency know if that’s who put you there.

I temped at an office once that gave certain patients less expensive toothbrushes. As far as I know the service was the same for everyone. But it’s still wrong.

I temped at an office one day that treated people differently based on insurance. It was disgusting IMO, but I was only there for the day, so I didn’t get all worked up about it. They also only gave me 30 min per pt, and almost every pt was new and need an FMS. In the end, I only had about 5-10 minutes to actually do a prophy. My first pt was this 17 year old girl who hadn’t been to the dentist in over 10 years and was terrified. I spent 90 minutes with her. I didn’t care what the staff may have said.
Never again.
