Having just moved to a new office and state, I have seen a lot of very difficult stain. I do not have a prophy jet, which would be lovely. Suggestions on how to remove stain

Ultrasonic! However, many people are sensitive to the ultrasonic so polishing with pumice mixed with a touch of hydrogen peroxide helps immensely. I will take calculus any day, but stain is my nemesis! Also, check what toothpaste and/or rinse they are using. Finding the cause to the stain to avoid it all together is the easiest! Crest Pro Health has stannous fluoride which is notorious for staining.

Kara is right, the ultrasonic is great for tenacious stain. When they are too sensitive for this, just make sure you have very sharp instruments. I really like the toe end of my 13/14 for lower lingual stain. When staining is really bad and I cant use my ultrasonic, I like to scale (as much of as poss.) polish, rescale any stains left, then re-polish. I also like to have my patients with heavy staining dry brush first, then use toothpaste. Sometimes that helps a lot. Make sure they are using Sonicare and do a demo for them. So many use it wrong!
