Hearing Loss!

I’ve been dealing with constant ringing in my ears for the last six months or so, and my family GP sent me to the ENT doc. Had a hearing test and exam done, and was told I have high frequency hearing loss ( 6,000-8,000 hertz range) and he thinks it is probably from my ultrasonic scaler! He recommended I use ear plugs when using it, and also around the ultrasonic cleaner in sterilization. I purchased the earplugs that hang around your neck at the hardware store. I am trying to wear them, but I usually forget they are there. I am going to try hanging them next to my Cavitron to make them more visible. I have been doing hygiene for 20 years. My question is, has anyone else had this happen to them? Also wanted to post this as a caution for other hygienists! Who would have thought? I go back for a hearing test in six months. Sure hope this ringing goes away!

Hearing loss is unfortunately common in our profession. Tinnitus or the ringing is associated with acoustic shock that could be caused by the ultrasonic scaler. My friend had custom ear plugs made for him. They take a mold of your inner ear and fabricate specialized ear plugs that reduce sound pressure going to your ear. You can leave them in all day and everything sounds with in normal limits they just reduce high volume and pitch. I am experiencing some high frequency loss as well but in 16-20K. I use to be an audio engineer before hygiene so I am sensitive to the subject. If you are experiencing 6-8k hearing loss that is very serious and would start using ear protection to keep it from getting worse.

Yes I’m going through the same thing. My tinnitus started a month a go in my left ear. Went to the ENT and had 2 hearing test, an. MRI , an ultrasound and nothing showed up . 2 weeks after the right ear started I’m wearing earplugs at work now and getting Custome made ones.. It’s very bothersome to sleep , I’m not sure how it happened it was sudden I think from the ultrasonic scaled being a dental hygienist for 15 years..

Hi Nell,
Hearing loss in dentists is one of the major risk due to the continuous exposure to noise. You can not escape it but you can protect your hearing. The best way is to protect your hearing with dental earplugs. I am using these while working in dental clinic and I found these quite good. You can check these here – https://www.dentalinnovationsllc.net/di-15-specs-circuitry/ .Hope these will help you too.. 🙂

Regards
Sam
