hourly to production/thank you card

My boss recently switched me from hourly to production and amazingly my pay has more than doubled. My production has greatly increased as well though. In a way I feel bad that he’s paying me this much money because I feel like at times he has a hard time making ends meet for the office. For example, waiting until we are extremely low on supplies to place an order. I want to show him how much I appreciate him. Do you all think it would be weird or appropriate for me to give him a thank you note and a gift card? Any other suggestions?

If you have doubled your pay because of switching to production, the doctor IS making money. Just because he waits to order supplies doesn’t necessarily mean he’s having problems making ends meet. Look at your numbers for assurance; he should be paying you about 35% of your production and the rest is his. A lot of times doctors switch hygienists to production thinking it’s going to save them money- out of greed. I wouldn’t write a thank you letter; he made the choice to switch you. Don’t feel bad for how much you make – you earned it. I can assure you he makes a lot more!

I don’t think it’s appropriate to give him a thank you card. If he’s already trying to make ends meet, I assume he wasn’t aware switching to production was going to be such a huge pay increase. Unfortunately, he might switch back to hourly in the future. I hope not though! Good luck.

Thank you both for your responses. I think you are right, I really appreciate the reassurance and support.
