How do I stand out for being accepted into dental hygiene school?

I was selected as one of the top 50 applicants to complete a proctored essay in a few weeks for entrance into the dental hygiene program in the Portland area.
I worked really hard to get a 4.0 in all of my pre-requisites. I also have experience as a dental assistant. But now I am worried I will not write a good enough essay and all my sleepless nights and time I missed with my 1-year-old while doing homework will be for nothing.
Do you have any tips on how I can make my essay stand out from the other applicants?
Thank you!

Congratulations! An essay is for the instructors to see if you are a good fit, not only for the hygiene program, but for the hygiene profession as a whole. Be yourself and write from the heart. That’s the only way they can get to know you.
Be mindful of your grammar and punctuation, as one trait a hygienist needs is attention to detail. Hygienists are preventive care specialists, so perhaps including why preventive care is important to you could be helpful. Your experience as a dental assistant might be a good point to include, as well.
Easier said than done, but please don’t stress. My dad used to always tell me that stressing over something isn’t going to change the situation, the outcome, or help. He was always right about that.
I wish you the best of luck! You got this!
