How long after surgery should a patient wait to get a dental cleaning?

I rescheduled a patient yesterday because she came in two weeks after back surgery for a herniated disc. I normally feel they should wait about 6-8 weeks. I feel like my doctor probably felt I could have done the cleaning. Is there anything I missed, or should I wait longer than 6-8 weeks for any surgery?
