I am a hygienist in a Pedo/Ortho office and have been there for 10 years. I have to say I have learned much more about ortho then was covered in school. I have acquired exceptional orthodontic skills. I remove wires, elastics if need be. It’s awesome! BTW There are 3 RDH on staff. Our office is not the norm. The DDS definitely appreciate their hygiene department and give us anything that’s need so we may deliver top notch care.

I have yet to meet an orthodontist with a hygienist. However, I know of endo and OS practices that utilize hygienists for anesthetic.

I do not know of any either. I’ve always thought it would be a great idea. I don’t think it would go over well in our community as the dentists are a tight knit group and would most likely not want to lose the production from general practice. I know that many of the specialists here do not like to hire currently employed assistants, in order not to create friction with the general dentist, as they are the foundation to their practice referrals!

I have seen some local ortho office commercials that advertise cleanings but I don’t know of any one personally who works for an orthodontist.

I have never met a hygienist that work for ortho but I heard about a hygienist that made $50 an hour working for an orthodontist. Not certain how true that was.

No ortho around NOLA hire hygienist that I am aware of. It could rub general practices wrong considering that is where ortho gets most of their referral patients.

I really do not think too many hygienists work in Ortho, but I do know one hygienists that does. She works in the orthodontists cosmetic practice as he also has another ortho practice. The cosmetic practice offers more cosmetic treatments like limited ortho etc… and botox and fillers. The botox etc… is performed by his wife, who is a physician. The hygienist not sure all the hygienist does for him, but she is the only one in the office with the physician. She does not perform hygiene cleanings etc… Sounds like a great job to me.
