how to scale crowns?

I’m a new recent graduate and have been a hygienist for about 3 months. We had a 2 year program in school and not a lot of time on hand instrumentation. I’m having a hard time scaling crowns when I scale with a curette it feels like it’s so tight and I hit the crown margin and can’t tell if there’s calculus there. What are good instruments to use and what kind of tips would make it easier?

With time and practice, your ability and confidence will improve. Start with using an ultrasonic with a slim insert followed by a sickle around crowns, as it may give you better access. You can also search Youtube for instructional videos with tips and tricks. Don’t forget you can also use your explorer to check for calculus, the more you practice with exploring, the better you will become. Be patient with yourself and keep trying your best, it’s all a learning process!
