Instrument Sharpening

I am thinking of ordering a device to help sharpen instruments. I like the idea of the sidekick, and have read a few positive comments about it. Any feedback–both positive and negative–would be greatly appreciated. also, if anyone has tried other devices, especially automated, I would love to know about them. Thanks!!

I’ve used both the Gleason Guide and the Sidekick. The Sidekick seems to work best when the instruments haven’t been sharpened by any other method. So if you get new instruments, sharpen only with the Sidekick from there on out. I actually prefer the Gleason Guide. For me, it seems to keep the angulation of the edge closer to the original shape without creating multiple bevels. Plus its so easy to sterilize- pop it and the stone into a sterile pouch and there you have it! My Sidekick ended up being a “drawer accessory;” it just sat there because I always go for the Gleason Guide.
