Insufficient instruments?

Hey so I am a new grad working as a hygienist fill-in with an agency. I’m noticing more and more that these offices do not have sufficient instruments at all! I know I was spoiled in school to have like 5 of everything, but I’m working in offices that don’t have a curette at all, no graceys, no universals, no nothing. The prophy cassette will have like 3 things, a mirror, H6/H7, probe/explorer, and sometimes one of those sickles that looks like an H6/H7 with a much more pronounced round curve(I do not know the name/number).

I really struggle to feel like I’m doing a good job when using these tools. Is this normal?

I wouldn’t say its normal. Proper instruments are a must! There are many dentists that not only respect their hygienist, but their patients, and provide the necessary instruments to get the job done properly. However, like you have found, there are a handful who don’t. I’m so sorry you are experiencing this frustration! It’s a valid frustration though.
Some hygienists who temp bring their own instruments. It’s really not a bad idea because without proper instruments you are doing a disservice to the patient (like you mentioned), but also using dull instruments will take a toll on your body over time.
I would suggest letting the temp agency know the situation at these offices and not return to them in the future. Let this also be a learning lesson on what you expect from a permanent office. For now, do your best and consider bringing your instruments with you, even if just as a back up. I applaud your ethics!
