Is Fluoride varnish safe during first trimester of pregnancy? Also is it bad if I applied varnish three times within two month while testing out new products?

According to Esther Wilkins (Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist) in the chapter on pregnant patients, “All patients can benefit from a topical application of fluoride solution, gel, varnish.” The FDA has categorized fluoride varnish as category B meaning, “Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.” However, I have found contradicting recommendations online; some sites say it’s okay, some say not. I would check the particular brand of varnish’s leaflet at the “contraindications” section. I talked with my sister, who has a 7 month old and is a dental assistant, and she said she wouldn’t risk it herself. As far as you testing varnish on yourself, if you aren’t swallowing large amounts I would assume you’d be okay, maybe test on just a few teeth at a time?
