Is LA w/ epi safe to use on pregnant patients?

Lidocaine is a pregnancy category B drug, but is it safe to use 2% lido with 1:100,000 epinephrine? I could not find the answer in my Malamed book and an article I recently read was unclear.

I have read that 2 carpules per appointment of lido w/ 1:100,000 epi are okay.

Dr. Malamed states that pregnancy is a relative contraindication to elective dental care. Also that local anesthetic and epi are not teratogens and may be administered in any trimester, but to be prudent in the amount administered. However, he does point out that having a release from the patient’s OB/GNY is recommended. I like to have a release from the patient’s physician that covers the administering of anesthetic, radiographs, and treatment in general that is signed and kept in the patient’s chart to be on the safe side.
