Medical Clearance

Does your office require medical authorization from the cardiologist when the pt is on Warfarin/Coumadin meds prior to SRP procedure? Also does your office contact the cardiologist office for the paper to be faxed or do you have the pt call Cardio and have the paper faxed to your office? My new office has the hygienists call the Cardio( or OBGYN for preg women) to have the paper faxed, but my old office did not contact the Cardio at all prior to SRP tx and had the pt contact the OBGYN prior to any dental tx.

Yes, my office always gets clearance for patients taking Warfarin and pregnant patients in writing – whether it be a prophy, SRP, or restorative treatment. If anything were to go wrong, even though a small chance, you could be held liable so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

We always want medical clearance for any medical conditions that need certain precautions during dental treatment. Joint replacements, heart issues, pregnancy, the list goes on and on. We have a form that the physician fills out.
