I have patients with white spots, mainly from ortho, who are interested in ways to make them go away. Doing some research, I have found clinicians do etching and MI applications every few weeks until the white spots blended in much more with the rest of the tooth. This was with patient compliance at home applying everynight as well. Has anyone ever tried this and had success or failure? Any tips otherwise?

Like you mentioned, it all comes down to patient compliance. Along with in-office treatment (active white spot lesions don’t need to be etched, but arrested ones do) the patient needs to do their part at home for results. I am a fan of MI paste especially for patients who don’t care for fluoride. While I have seen results its interesting that studies I have found state that over an 8-week period, MI paste does not appear to be more effective than normal home care for improving the appearance of white spot lesions. Here’s the link to one of these studies: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23273358
Thanks Kara! I will be trying it on my coworker, since I know she will comply. Hoping to see results.
