Need advice on dealing with part-time hygienists in my office who are rude and disrespectful.

I have been practicing hygiene for 7 years and work three days a week. On Fridays, my day off, two different hygienists come in and work. I always leave the hygiene operatories perfectly stocked, organized, and ready to go. However, they do not do the same for me. In fact, they leave the two operatories in such bad shape, for the last year I have been going in on the weekends for an hour or two (without clocking in) to clean up. I find this extremely unprofessional, disrespectful, and uncourteous. The office manager and doctor know I do this. The doctor always mentions how the Friday hygienists walk all over him, however they are the office manager’s favorites, and the doctor allows the office manager to run the show. Last Friday I received a not-so-friendly text that the new anterior sickle scalers that came in were not to be put with the set-ups on the trays (which I had done), but they were actually a “secret stash” for the Friday hygienists. What?! First, I don’t read minds so this should have been communicated to me; second, why would they need 12 anterior scalers hiding in a drawer?! It just seems most efficient to have them on the trays! Further, I come in early and even take short lunches to sharpen instruments, the Friday hygienists NEVER sharpen. However, all of a sudden they don’t like how I’m sharpening! I just can’t get it right in their eyes. Am I the only person who deals with this? Should I let it go? I have mentioned this to the doctor and he just tells me how they walk all over him too. When I have talked to the office manager, she comes up with excuses to back them up. I go above and beyond at my office (the assistant has told me this, repeatedly), take constructive criticism well and encourage it openly, and keep many complaints to myself as to not be seen as “difficult” or a “primadonna.” Am I over-reacting? Please help with any advice!

You need to leave a note as to what those two part-timers need to complete in the operatory before they leave at the end of the day. Make it into a check off procedure sheet and do not come in on weekend etc….. You may need to have a meeting with theses two and the doctor present. Forget about involving the OM. OM needs to stay out of it.

If you must continue to spend extra time to clean up after them, I would definitely be putting those hours on your timecard. As long as you are willing to put up with it, everyone will allow you to. You need to give the doc a reason to change things.
Also, I agree with hygienius, the OM needs to stay out of it.

Sorry to say but your dentist is the enabler of the situation. Too bad I’m not the hygienist that comes in on those Fridays. I too would leave it perfectly stocked, organized, and ready to go. I agree with Sue Halverson that you should clock in on the weekends (or anytime) that you’re there.
