New office – Only hygienist – Any “must-do” suggestions?

I am starting at a brand new federally funded dental clinic on Friday and will be the only hygienist on staff. Since this is a new office, what I do will kind of set a precedent for what takes place in the future. Are there any others out there who have taken on the hygienist role in a brand new office and do you have any suggestions? Please keep in mind that this is going to be an office that works a lot with uninsured and Medicaid patients.

My only suggestions would be to set up a really good education program. If the clinic can afford it, I would suggest getting some good pamphlets that discuss perio disease and good homecare. Many patients learn best with visual aids.
The other thing is set up a solid perio protocol/program. Make sure that whoever else is hired as a hygienist has a good program to follow so all patients receive the care they need.
Have fun with this new endeavor, I am sure it will bring you a lot of enjoyment and feeling of “helping others”.

I agree with Sue!! You did not mention if you were a new hygienist…..just remember full Perio charting including recession, probing depths, bleeding, suppuration, furcation, mobility……All together…..THOSE numbers don’t lie. If it’s Perio, please treat the patient correctly. The numbers are important. It will be hard though when dealing with Medicare……any insurance coverage is tough to deal with.
Good luck!
