Office pays lowered wages for their Mandatory CE, is this fair?

When your office makes it mandatory to attend a ceu on your working day, is it fair that we are compensated 12-13$ per hour instead of hygiene wages?

Is it fair? No! Is it legal? By no means am I an attorney, however the Fair Labor Standards Act (which is federal law) says, “The Fair Labor Standards Act does not preclude an employer from lowering an employee’s hourly rate, provided the rate paid is at least the minimum wage, or from reducing the number of hours the employee is scheduled to work.” So it seems that according to federal law it’s legal. I must add that the legality may differ due to state laws you may fall under; you may want to contact your state’s employment department, an attorney, or other like entity. I’d like to think that everybody who runs a business would do it in a fair way, especially to their employees. However that’s just not the case. If as hygienists we stood together and refused to tolerate this sort of treatment, maybe dentists might change their ways. But jobs are scarce; dentists know this and use it to their advantage.

Contact your states labor board to get correct information. Imo, if it is okay by the labor board then this office should lower every employees wages during the CE. I do not think it is right to lower your pay and no one else. If I attend a mandatory CE during a work day my boss pays my full wages. If it is on my day off I don’t get paid, only the CE is paid for.
