“Old school” hygienist

I have been working in my office for over 15 years. Generally, I like my job. I have great patients and great co workers. But…my office is VERY old fashioned. We do not have digital X-rays, I hand write in charts, no computer program. In fact, there isn’t a computer in the office!! My boss likes to do all sealants, impressions, and study models himself. The office has not made any changes in the past 20, 25 years. No new equipment, anything. (we have replaced hand pieces, furniture, etc..) My point is that I am thinking about pursuing something else besides being a hygienist at a private office. But, my resume will be worthless. I have no experience with computers, digital x-rays, charting on computers…that kind of thing. Any advice?

The computers and digital equipment come easily…the most important skills you already have…I would recommend shadowing in an office and learning the equipment before starting but if you have basic knowledge of computers it will all click pretty quickly…Most places are happy to let you learn the equipment before being set loose 🙂 Go for it 🙂

start temping! I’ve been temping for 5 years and got all my experience from that. I know almost every computer and digital xray software because of it.
