Pacemaker and ultrasonic use

I have a patient that recently had a pacemaker placed. I know that you cannot use a cavitron ultrasonic during hygiene treatment if they have a pacemaker. Just wondering if this is still protocol or if someone knows of research that says its no longer a contraindication?

Pacemakers use to be un-shielded many decades ago. Pacemakers are now shielded and ultrasonics can be used. I used mine on a pt with a pacemaker just this morning. I always make sure I stay at least 4-6 inches away from pacemaker while the hand piece is active.
