Pediatric Cover Letter

Hi, I’m a full time hygienist in a general practice for over 2 years. I have always enjoyed children the best, and have always dreamed of being a pediatric dental hygienist. The problem is I live in rural Iowa and there is no pediatric dentist around my area. I would have to commute which is fine, but I have looked into the pediatric dental offices and had an interview with one when I was a dental assistant and they are only interested in hiring assistants. So I thought if I had an amazing cover letter specifically stating why hiring a hygienist would be a great opportunity for them. I included my cover letter below, but feel like my 3rd paragraph could be a little better of setting me apart from an assistant. I was hoping you had a few suggestions for me. Thanks!Dear Doctor,Please find enclosed my resume for a dental hygiene position. Your practice is just the sort of place where I would like to work. I graduated in 2012 from Hawkeye Community College’s dental hygiene program. I have received my Iowa license for Dental Hygiene and anesthesia. After practicing for over 2 years in a general practice, my desire is to work as a dental hygienist in a prevention-oriented pediatric dentistry practice. I have worked as a dental assistant while attending school for dental hygiene and have worked as a dental hygienist at a general practice. I have worked as a dental hygienist in a general practice for over 2 years, and feel that my specialty is working with children. Educating young children is important to improve their oral home care especially as they grow older to prevent periodontal diseases as an adult. Apprehensive children are part of the job and I have a lot of success with the tell-show-do technique and really enjoy earning a child’s trust overtime.I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss my qualifications, background, and answer any questions you may have after reviewing my enclosed resume.Thank you for your time and consideration.

There are some Pedo offices that have a hygienist on staff. What you’ve written sounds like a great way to get your resume out to the target offices. Sorry, there was not an immediate answer for you. Pedo hygienists are few and far between. Good luck. Follow your dream. You will eventually be exactly where you need to be.
