Pediatric Office ruined me?!

Im feeling depressed and really hating my job. I’ve worked in a pedo office pretty much right out of school and I want out. I feel like I am not able to use the skills I was taught and can do within my scope of practice. The dentists just do everything. We are only expected to do the cleanings and X-rays. We do nothing for the community- no school visits…it’s just not where I want to be in my career.

Anyone in this situation? I’m afraid that if I search no one will hire me because I’m “ruined” or if I am hired I won’t do anything correctly because I haven’t done adult prophys since school.

I’m so sorry you are hating your job! If you are feeling depressed, its definitely time for a change. Be aware there’s downfalls no matter which direction you go with hygiene; whether it be pedo, general practice, perio practice, public health, etc.

I once worked with a hygienist who came in and worked a couple times per month because she worked the majority of the time in pedo and wanted to keep her skills up. However, I don’t think you completely lost your skills. I think you’d be surprised how quickly things come back.

I also don’t think you won’t get hired because you’ve only worked in pedo. You went to school, passed boards, and are a licensed professional. You won’t know this until you try though!

To be honest in my experience, not many offices do things for the community. So if a “good office” to you is giving back to the community, you may find it challenging to find a “good office.” Have you ever tried to take the initiative and organize something for your office? You can also volunteer and go into schools on your own too. If you want to give back, or do anything for that matter, sometimes you just have to go do it and not wait on others.

I wish you the best of luck!

I don’t necessarily think that a good office is one that goes out into the community, I wouldn’t expect most offices to do that. However, as the only pedo office in about a 1hr radius, I think community involvement should be a priority. I asked to take some learning materials to do a presentation at my daughters school and I was told I was stupid for wanting To do that. It was jokingly, but still. That dentist doesn’t like doing that stuff so it’s not done. I haven’t asked since then.

Our office is just so “behind the times” and there doesn’t seem to be much hope to move forward anytime soon. Paper charting, no digital.. which isn’t totally bad, just not where I want to be at this time.

Thank you so much for your response. I think it definitely solidifies my thought processes right now.

You could try temping, either through and agency or drop off resumes at offices in your area. That would allow you to get some experience with adult patients without the pressures of starting a new job. Good luck in your search. Stay confident:)
