Perio office scheduling

I am currently working in a periodontal office that has been open a little over a year. We have been very busy getting established and have grown our patient base very quickly. We have noticed that in the last couple of months we have started to have more cancellations/ no shows. It appears that several patients are going through SRP, eval, and first perio maintenance appt and then not coming back. We have considered making an additional phone call to patient in between these visits to touch base with them, and I stress the importance of the more frequent cleanings every chance I get with out being too pushy. Does anyone have any suggestions or things that have worked for your office? Thank you!

Are you pre-scheduling before they leave the office for their next appointment? I have seen that work well. Do you explain how quickly virulent bacteria can repopulate, hence the need for more frequent recalls? Not that you want to overload a patient, but letting them know, with perhaps a printed handout explaining this, may help patients keep their appointments. I would also include research on the oral-systemic link in this handout. A phone call in between visits (or email or text), like you mentioned, is a good idea too. It’s hard to make patients keep their appointments, but educating them with appointment reminders, might help. Best of luck!
