Perio probing

I currently work up front answering phones. While I’ve been scheduling patients I have noticed that our patients rarely have perio probings done and I asked the office manager about it. She responded it’s because the insurance only pays for two exams a year (one with the Dr and one with the hygienist.) Is this right or is there any law being broken? How often should they REALLY be done?

All patients should be perio charted as apart of their treatment at least once per year. It is the standard of care; to not provide standard of care is neglect. Every dental board states neglect is (obviously) illegal. Whether or not an “exam” is done really has nothing to do with the frequency of perio charting. Also, instead of asking the office manager about it, I would ask the hygienist about it, as she is the one providing treatment or lack there of.

I agree with Kara. Also if the pt is a 4910 they should be charted at every appt. you must know how deep a picket is that day to provide adequate care. If the pt had a 6mm pocket on MB of 3 and today it is a 4mm you wouldn’t want to go off the previous charting and ruin the LJE attachment you’ve created from the previous 4910. You must probe every perio pt every time and only scale to the base of the pocket recorded that very day.
