At my office I place SRP/PM pts on Periomed for a long time if necessary. The doctor likes for them to be on it, esp because of fl2. The more experienced hygienist hates it & gets mad if she sees one of my pts on periomed due to it causing staining. She also said that they should not be on it for more than two wks. Is this right?

PerioMed is a fluoride rinse that contains stannous fluoride. Whether in Crest Pro Health toothpaste or in a rinse, stannous fluoride is notorious for staining. However, stannous fluoride is antimicrobial, anti-sensitivity, anti-plaque, and it prevents demineralization, and promotes remineralization. So I don’t know why you would limit a patient to only using it for 2 weeks (unless instructed by a dentist). It would be like prescribing a patient prescription strength fluoride toothpaste but telling them to only use it for two weeks. Maybe the other hygienist is getting it mixed up with Peridex (chlorhexidine)?
