If a patient falls under the criteria of needing a premed, I contact the patient’s physician/surgeon and get the recommendation in writing and keep it in the patient’s chart. Some dentists prefer the prescription for premed comes from the physician/surgeon directly others will write it themselves, it just depends on the dentist. Some patients get annoyed or don’t understand why its needed, in which you educate them on their particular risks. This is also where having the recommendation directly from their physician/surgeon comes in handy.
