Probe perio maintenance patients once per year or every appointment?

Does your office require that PM patients get a FM Probe at every appointment or once a year? All other offices that I have worked for required it only once a year and in school were taught the same thing as well, once per year. Thank you

The standard of care regarding probing is once per year. However, you must use your clinical judgement on whether a patient needs to be assessed more. If a patient (perio or gingivitis) shows active signs of disease, it might be in everyone’s best interest to probe more often. In the offices that I’ve worked in, that decision has always been left up to my clinical judgement, however I know offices that probe every perio patient every appointment as a general rule. Probing every perio patient every appointment (or at least every six months) is being thorough and comprehensive, which isn’t a bad thing at all. This also ensures that no disease “slips through the cracks.”

Our office standard is once a year. However, I spot probed at every appointment for PMT.
