I feel your pain and frustration. I graduated in June and finally scored a 3 day a week job. It took countless interviews to get my job not to mention being passed up completely just for being a male hygienist. I just had temp and volunteer experience but I stressed the fact that I was able to keep the schedule in the most stressful situations. I played the negotiating card when it came to pay as well. I took less than the average just to gain a job in hopes that I can prove my worth with time. Keep your head up, you will find what you are looking for.

I read that is was contraindicated in outdated research and old editions of some text books but the view has changed since then. I have used ultrasonic scalers and polished on HIV patients and feel comfortable doing do.

I recently graduated and all through school had the same problem. You are not alone I was the same way and still to a lesser degree still am. I couldn’t control it and giving injections was the worst. My MD mentioned propranolol might help but I didn’t want to take it. I adapted my fulcrums to compensate for the shakiness. It is something that will lessen with experience and I bet with time will go away. I wouldn’t consider a different career if you love what you do. You worked too hard to get where you are today and to give it up now over something that everyone experiences is not something you should consider. Hang in there it will get better.

I got my job through my states employment department. It is worth checking to see if anything is available. Volunteer to meet some professionals to network with. It doesn’t hurt and looks good on the resume.

I work in a community clinic that sees a lot of patients in drug and alcohol treatment programs in which we use alcohol-free CHX for.

I failed that thing and most of my class failed that as well. It is a lot harder than what the dentists have to go through. I love restorative and thought I was great at it but I scored 72 on it. It is frustrating not being able to see what they critiqued. I heard Clark College has a great restorative program and would recommend checking it out. I know the class fills quickly so keep an eye out for it. Keep your head up you will make it.

If they don’t have fluoridated water suggest fluoride supplements. In my community we don’t have fluoridated water and the early childhood caries are rampant. It is so sad seeing the children with bombed out teeth. Stress the importance of regular visits and they start when the child turns one.

I am so sorry. Don’t let one bad apple ruin a good career. I am just out of school but my wife is a dental assistant and it took her many different jobs to land in a good place. Keep strong and keep looking for your place. I wish you all the luck in the world.

Hearing loss is unfortunately common in our profession. Tinnitus or the ringing is associated with acoustic shock that could be caused by the ultrasonic scaler. My friend had custom ear plugs made for him. They take a mold of your inner ear and fabricate specialized ear plugs that reduce sound pressure going to your ear. You can leave them in all day and everything sounds with in normal limits they just reduce high volume and pitch. I am experiencing some high frequency loss as well but in 16-20K. I use to be an audio engineer before hygiene so I am sensitive to the subject. If you are experiencing 6-8k hearing loss that is very serious and would start using ear protection to keep it from getting worse.
