Doctors can be surprisingly willing to purchase new instruments. At my new office, I asked the doctor if we could purchase some new instruments for hygiene. I expected him to approve some new sickles and universals, but he purchased 8 brand-new kits! He was much more willing to replace instruments than replace hygienists. He otherwise seemed so unapproachable to me, so I was shocked and extremely relieved at how willing he was to give me the supplies I needed to succeed.

I understand! I graduated last year and I still feel overwhelmed sometimes. Don’t quit. It’s going to be hard no matter where you go! As uncomfortable as it can be, ask for feedback! Ask the other hygienist for tips with taking FMXs. I remember I felt unqualified and embarrassed most of the time. Sometimes, the staff in the office got annoyed with me, but it refines you and teaches you lessons you’ll never forget! Hang in there!
