Cavitron is my lifesaver! I love using it during prophy or even SRP. However, I only handscale if the patients have sensitive teeth during a regular cleaning. I do find that the cavitron is more time efficient and most pt feels a lot cleaner after its use. Also, I go back with fine handscaling afterwards. Some patients don’t like it because it sprays water so it’s good to ask for their opinions too.
Question: Using piezo or cavitron on everyone? | May 10, 2014
My doctor says I’m only allowed to clock in 15 min prior to my first patient.
Question: Paid before and after patients? | May 8, 2014
You won’t be looked down upon. Some patients may prefer handscaling rather than the cavitron esp patients who have sensitive teeth. Overall, I feel the cavitron is more efficient, and I always go back with handscaling after.

Question: CE's paid and wage when in classes? | May 6, 2014
My first office that i worked at after i graduated was similar to this. I had assistants who takes xray for me, clean up the room, and all I have to do is jump from room to room to do prophys or SRP. It seems ideal at first, but i feel that in the long run, I’m losing my skills to take xrays or do other things since I’m so dependent on the assistants to do everything besides cleaning. Also, the cons of it is that you don’t really have time to develop a relationship with the patient because you’re also in a hurry to jump to the next patient and start cleaning. I prefer to have time with my patients and work at my own pace. If you do accelerated hygiene, make sure you get paid more.

I would definitely explain to the patient that she has periodontal disease and explain the process of how it starts. Show her the radiographic bone loss and visually in the mouth. Give her a pamphlet about gum disease that she can read about and definitely refer her to a periodontist asap.
