What type of prophy handpiece that meets CDC Guidelines is recommended? Early on there was a prophy hand piece with shells that could be sterilized, but I have been unable to find them.

The CDC recommends handpieces that can be heat sterilized. Studies have shown that internal contamination can occur causing a contamination risk to the next patient if not heat sterilized. If the motor cannot be removed from the dental unit, the CDC says they should not be used.
Young was doing a special when you buy so many prophy angles you got a handpiece free, but I think that special is over. You might want to call and ask Young Dental’s customer service and ask though! I’m pretty certain that they have a special now that if you buy one handpiece you get a second free. Having more than one handpiece is super important because the CDC requires handpieces to be heat sterilized in between every patient due to internal contamination. While they are spendy, the ergonomics of this handpiece are worth every penny for the longevity of your career and in reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries! Here’s a link to Young’s current specials: http://www.youngdental.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Young_Q2_2016_Promotions_Updated.pdf. Ask your supply rep about specials too.
I’ve never personally used the Midwest Freedom, but I’ve heard that it isn’t powerful enough for many clinicians.
