RDA Scope of Practice

Are the RDAs in California allowed to use scalers/ cavitrons to do a prophy???

According to the California Dental Board’s website, no, dental assistants are not allowed to use scalers or ultrasonics to do a prophy. There are permitted duties such as removing orthodontic cement that with certain certifications dental assistants are allowed to do (also under certain supervision). Believe it or not, i saw a RDA whom my dentist borrowed for a day from a pedodontist. She offered to perform prophy procedure which meant she picked up the scaler to clean the kid’s teeth. She said her boss let her do it. Sad that he is my dentist’s close friend. I told my doc it is illegal, she just shrugged 🙁
